Follow these steps to migrate your project(s) to NVivo Collaboration Server 15.

Step 1: Back up your current server

  1. Please ensure your computer meets the System requirements for NVivo Collaboration Server 15.

  2. Check for Supporting connections from clients running different major versions of NVivo for Windows.

  3. Ensure you have backed up your server by taking a snapshot of your Collaboration Server computer/Virtual Machine.

  4. Ensure you have taken a Backup, restore and repair projects (databases). Each project is essentially a database, and each project database needs to be backed up.

Step 2: Deactivate and uninstall your current server

  1. Open NVivo Collaboration Server Manager for your existing server that you wish to upgrade and take note the following settings. You will need to add these settings manually after you have installed NVivo Collaboration Server 15:

    • Licensing tab – NVivo Collaboration Server 15 License key

    • Allocation subtab under Licensing – Named Users – Check the list to see if anyone is added as a Named User

    • Users tab – Users, Project Creators and Administrators group

    • Settings tab – Data File and Log file location

    • Backups tab – Backup Schedule.

  2. Check that no user(s) is/are connected to any NVivo Collaboration Server project.

  3. Deactivate NVivo Collaboration Server license. In NVivo Collaboration Server Manager, go to the Licensing tab and click Deactivate.

    Note: NVivo Server needs to be connected to Internet for a successful deactivation. Also, any NVivo users connected to NVivo Collaboration Server will get disconnected when you deactivate the license.

  4. Uninstall currently installed NVivo Collaboration Server through Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program list.

Step 3: Download and Install NVivo Collaboration Server 15

  1. Download NVivo Collaboration Server 15 ISO.

  2. Before installing NVivo Collaboration Server, ensure that the environment has been Configure the environment for NVivo Collaboration Server 15 compatibility.

  3. Mount NVivo Collaboration Server 15 ISO downloaded in step 1.

  4. Install NVivo Collaboration Server 15, ensure you run the setup installer.

  5. During installation, you will be prompted to enter the NVivo Server license key. You can also configure an SSL Certificate (optional) for secure (https) communication with NVivo Server manager. For more information, see Working with SSL certificates in NVivo Collaboration Server.

  6. Once NVivo Server has been installed, access NVivo Collaboration Server Manager and activate the license.

    Note: The license should have been de-activated as per Step 2: Deactivate and uninstall your current server above for a successful reactivation of the license.

Step 4: Configure NVivo Collaboration Server 15

  1. Configure NVivo Collaboration Server as per the settings noted down in Step 2: Deactivate and uninstall your current server. If you are experiencing any issues with adding users in NVivo Collaboration Server manager, please ensure that the Configure the environment for NVivo Collaboration Server 15 compatibility.

  2. Open SQL Server Management studio and reattach all databases. Ensure to launch Management studio as Administrator on the computer. Refer to attach a database on TechNet for instructions.

    Note: All project database files (.nvp files) should still be available in the same location where they were stored previously. The project database files are not deleted/removed when NVivo Collaboration Server is uninstalled.

    By default, project database files are stored in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL14.QSRNVIVO9\MSSQL\DATA\. Or C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.QSRNVIVO9\MSSQL\DATA\. (if the current uninstalled server was upgraded from a previous version).

  3. After the databases have been attached in SQL Server Management studio, open NVivo Collaboration Server manager and refresh the list of server projects by going to Projects tab and clicking on Refresh.

  4. Once the above steps have been completed, use NVivo 15 desktop application to test that projects can be opened:
