Activate a server license key

When you install NVivo Server you are prompted to enter a license key—you must activate this license key before users can connect to NVivo Server to work with NVivo Server projects.

Depending on the conditions of your license, the key will entitle you to run NVivo Server and entitle you to a specific number of Client Access Licenses (CALs)—refer to Understand licensing for NVivo Server for more detailed information.

To activate the license key:

  1. Open NVivo Server Manager in your Internet browser—enter the web address https://<servername>/NVivo11

  2. Click the Licensing tab.

  3. On the left, click the Licenses tab.

  4. For the license you want to activate, click Activate.

  5. In the Activate License dialog box, enter the required details.

  6. Click Activate.

NOTE

  • To deactivate a license key—for example, if you want to use it on another server—click Deactivate in the Licenses tab (you may need to reallocate CALs as a result of deactivation).
  • If activation fails because you do not have an Internet connection, you can request an activation key from QSR International to activate your license—refer to How to activate if Internet activation fails for more information.
  • The first time you open the NVivo Server Manager, you may be prompted to install the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in.

Add a server license key

If you need additional Client Access Licenses (CALs), you can purchase a supplementary license. The supplementary license key must be added and activated.

To add another license key:

  1. Open NVivo Server Manager in your Internet browser—enter the web address https://<servername>/NVivo11

  2. Click the Licensing tab.

  3. On the left, click the Licenses tab.

  4. Click the Add button.

  5. In the Add License dialog box, enter the new license key.

  6. Click Add.

The license is added. The license must now be activated—the CALs associated with the key will be available once the license is activated.

How to activate if Internet activation fails

If activation fails—for example, because you do not have an Internet connection—you can generate an installation key and send your activation information (including the installation key) to QSR International. QSR will verify your information and send you an activation key that you can use to activate your license.

To generate the installation key and send your activation request to QSR:

  1. On the Activate License dialog box, click the Generate button to create an installation key. If you cannot see the Generate button, enter the required fields and then click Activate.

  2. Save the information on this screen as an image file (for example, a .jpg or .png), and then provide it to the Support team at QSR International.

  3. After QSR has processed your information and sent you an activation key, you can enter the activation key and activate your license—see below for instructions.

To enter the activation key sent to you by QSR:

  1. On the Licenses tab, for the license you want to activate, click Activate.

  2. In the Activate License dialog box, enter the required details—you cannot enter the activation key yet (you will do this in the next step), and then click Activate.

  3. When the activation fails because there is no Internet connection, additional fields are displayed and you can enter the activation key that was sent to you by QSR.

  4. Click Activate again to activate your license using the activation key.
