NVivo Windows Release 1

In this topic

What is NVivo?

NVivo Windows Release 1 is a desktop application that lets users organize, analyze and visualize information—anything from Word documents and PDFs to videos, podcasts, photos and database tables. Users can organize their material by topic and uncover trends and emerging themes. The visualization tools let them create diagrams, charts or maps to present and clarify their discoveries.

Users may store their work (the data they import or create, plus their analysis) as NVivo Windows Release 1 project (.nvp) files, or asprojects if using.

NVivo Collaboration Cloud is an optional additional module that allows users to collaborate in teams and store their project files in the cloud. Refer to Data storage models for more information.

For further information about using NVivo, refer to Other NVivo resources.

NVivo versions and editions

Previous NVivo releases had version numbers, continuing up to version 12. All releases since March 2020 are called simply 'NVivo', however, where necessary, particular releases can be identified by their 'release' number (e.g. 1.6), shown in the About information in the app.

NVivo 12 Windows came in two 'editions': Pro and Plus. NVivo Plus had all the functionality of NVivo Pro as well as tools to support large data sets and social network analysis. For NVivo (Release 1) all non-enterprise purchases have the functionality of the previous 'Plus' edition, now called 'coding enhancements'. Enterprise purchases are still available as Pro or Plus.

myLumivero

NVivo (Release 1) is integrated with online user 'myLumivero' profiles and accounts, accessed through the myLumivero portal. These are essential for use of cloud modules and in most cases for activation of NVivo client installations. See myLumivero in the NVivo user online Help for more information.

Collaborating in NVivo

The simplest way for teams to collaborate on a project is to work with a single project file saved on a network drive—however, only one user can open and work with the project at a time.

Lumivero offer two more sophisticated solutions. NVivo Collaboration Server stores projects on a server within an organization's network. The software allows concurrent multi-user access.

Alternatively, NVivo Collaboration Cloud allows users to distribute projects to team members via the cloud and gather returned, modified copies to merge back into the master version.
